Devil's Third, the third-person shooter from Tomonobu Itagaki's Valhalla Game Studios, will finally be released in 2014, the designer has claimed.
Initially planned for an early 2013 release, the PS3, PC and Xbox 360 action game hit a development roadblock when unexpected costs related to development of its engine prompted now-closed publisher THQ to drop the title.
Ahead of THQ's eventual bankruptcy all of Devil's Third's rights, including development and distribution, were transferred from the publisher to the Japanese studio.
"Next year will be the year we'll be releasing the console game, Devil's Third," he said.
"At the moment, it is about 80% complete, and we can about see the end of it. However, there's still a little more polishing that needs to be done. That's also one of the reasons I've decided to work independently."
"For you fans out there, I'd like to apologize for making you worry," he continued. "We'll be going all out next year, so please look forward to it."
Devil's Third was unveiled with a trailer in June 2010.
Last summer designer Itagaki claimed development was "pretty well along".
"I'm building upon the context I've created up to now to provide gameplay that will really surprise people," he said. "I'm not sure there's really a game like this on consoles, and I'd like fans to know that I'm definitely building this up Itagaki-style."
