PS4 software sales passed 9.7m in 2013, PS Plus subs almost double

Sony touts strong PS4 software attach rate during the holiday season

PlayStation 4 owners purchased "more than" 9.7 million games in 2013, according to Sony 'estimates'.

That figure accounts for software sales via both retail and through the digital PlayStation Store globally as of December 31, 2013.

According to Sony, the system's top-selling games included Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, FIFA 14 and Killzone Shadow Fall.

This comes after Sony announced Tuesday that PS4 hardware sales topped 4.2 million in 2013 globally, placing it some 1.2 million sales ahead of Xbox One which had sold three million by the end of the year, according to Microsoft.

The PS4's arrival has also sparked a significant rise in the global PlayStation Plus user base.

Subscriptions to the premium PSN service have increased 90 percent since the console's November 2013 launch, says Sony, which is unsurprising considering that, unlike PS3 and Vita, a subscription is required for multiplayer play on PS4.

"The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn't be more thrilled," commented Sony Computer Entertainment president and group CEO Andrew House. "After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014."

Sony revealed PlayStation Now at CES, the official name for its Gaikai-powered online network that streams a range of PS3 and PS2 games across numerous devices such as tablets and TVs.
