Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford first expressed interest in a Vita version of Borderlands 2 in July 2012, but said that he'd like to outsource the development and encouraged fans to lobby Sony for support of the project.
At GamesCom in August 2013, Sony confirmed that a portable version of the popular loot-driven shooter was in development at Iron Galaxy, the studio which most recently released indie fighting game Divekick and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online.
"You spoke, we listened, and with the wonderful collaboration between 2K, Sony and the team at Iron Galaxy Studios we can finally make Borderlands 2 on PS Vita a reality," Gearbox Software's Adam Fletcher said at the time.
"The Vita gives Borderlands 2 fans the ability to play the game anywhere they want, complete with of all the unique benefits of the Vita, and will truly bring the four-player cooperative experience to the palms of your hands. A new era of portable shoot-and-loot awaits!"
