Shovel Knight gets new trailer and release date

A new trailer for Shovel Knight has been released, showing some of the game's retro references.

The trailer also confirms the game's release date as March 31.

Set for release on Wii U, 3DS and Steam, Shovel Knight is a retro 2D action platformer inspired by adventure games of the NES era.

The trailer highlights some of the game's retro nods to the likes of Castlevania III, Mega Man and DuckTales.

In a recent blog post, developer Yacht Club Games confirmed that the game "hit Alpha this week" and was on track for its release date.

"If you're wondering why it took so long, let's just say the game got a lot bigger than we originally intended, and we think everyone will be happy with that", the blog says.

Shovel Knight is a Kickstarter project that, with a goal of $75,000, ultimately earned over $311,000.

It will have a chiptune soundtrack composed by Jake Kaufman - who creates the music for WayForward's games - with extra tracks from Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae.
