Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition is free on US 3DS eShop

Co-op spin-off quest available until February 2

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition is available for free via the US 3DS eShop for a short time.

Available now until February 2, Four Swords is a top-down Zelda spin-off with a multiplayer twist; up to four players can take control of their own link and to fight enemies and complete dungeons that require co-operative tactics to overcome.

Four Swords Anniversary Edition is actually a DSi game, which works on 3DS thanks to its compatibility with DS titles. This version is an expanded port of the Game Boy Advance original with a new single player mode and two exclusive new areas, each containing three fresh levels.

It also contains special levels based on retro Zelda titles, including the original NES Legend of Zelda, the Game Boy entry Link's Awakening, and the Super NES classic A Link to the Past. It was previously offered as a free download in 2011 as part of Nintendo's Zelda 25th anniversary celebrations.

It's surprise return to the 3DS eShop coincides with the release of A Link to the Past on the Wii U Virtual Console on Thursday. The full US eShop update list is through here.
