Orchid becomes Killer Instinct's next free-to-play character

Thunder returns behind the Xbox One fighter's paywall

The free-to-play character in Killer Instinct has been switched for the third time, with Orchid now on offer.

The Xbox One reboot launched alongside the system as a free-to-play title. Gamers had access to one character, Jago, for free, and had to pay extra to unlock access to the other characters.

At the start of January, Microsoft and developer Double Helix released a patch that introduced a character rotation system, changing the free character on a regular basis.

After changing from Jago to Sabrewulf, the free character was again changed last week to Thunder.

Now owners of the free version will instead be able to play as Orchid. Known as Black Orchid in the original Killer Instinct, she's a secret agent with the ability to turn into a fire cat.

Players who wish to unlock other characters have two options. The Combo Breaker pack includes the first eight characters for $19.99 / £16.99 / €19.99.

Alternatively, the Ultra Edition ($39.99 / £34.99 / €39.99) includes the same eight characters from the Combo Breaker one, plus character accessory packs, costumes and the original Killer Instinct arcade game.

In CVG's Killer Instinct review, we said: "Killer Instinct's revival is a surprise success. Long-time fighting game players should feel confident about picking up the complete package on the Xbox Live Marketplace, and can look forward to having a accomplished game that's easy to play, but has a high skill-ceiling to strive towards."
