November 1992 - Sonic The Hedgehog 2 artwork
Whatever your opinion on the recent new designs of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy may be, there's no denying it's even further removed from the original design.
Yes, back in the Mega Drive days Sonic used to be something of a chubby funster, his little pot belly defying the laws of aerodynamics and still somehow allowing Mr The Hedgehog to reach ridiculous speeds.
In Sonic 2 his mate Miles 'Tails' Prower made his debut, appearing as a secondary character to not only give Sonic a buddy to tag along with him, also to enable multiplayer gameplay for the first time in the series.
Sega's insistence on writing his name in that format meant it would be years before some people got the "miles per hour" pun in his name. In fact, there's a chance your mind was only just blown reading that last sentence.
The Mega Drive Sonic games have been released digitally on every possible system and device known to man, so if you aren't too keen on the redesigned characters of Sonic Boom, at least you can rest assured that the good fat lad version is only a download away.
The above and countless other pieces of classic 90s games artwork was created by Greg Martin, who sadly passed away this year.
