Rust sells over one million copies

Steam Early Access game hits milestone in two months

Work-in-progress survival game Rust has already reached a million sales in roughly two months.

The news was revealed by the game's creator Garry Newman, when he tweeted a link to a screenshot of his Steam page showing the total number of sales as 1,001,570.

Rust was originally designed as a clone of DayZ, after Newman became frustrated by its instability.

Over time the game has evolved to include animals and hunting, becoming more of a survival game than a survival horror.

As well as being potentially attacked by others playing the game, players can also die from the likes of starvation, drowning, hypothermia, attacks from wildlife or exposure to radiation.

The game also features a crafting mechanic, leading some to describe it as a cross between DayZ and Minecraft.

A recent update to the game removed its zombies, which developer Facepunch Studios has said in the past were never intended to be a permanent fixture.

An alpha version of Rust was originally released on Steam Early Access on December 11, meaning it has reached the one million sales milestone in a little under two months.
