Japanese PS4 launch event to be livestreamed by Sony

Hideo Kojima to be among the guests

Sony will host a livestream counting down to the launch of the PlayStation 4 in Japan.

The console is set to release in the region on Saturday, February 22, with Sony's festivities kicking off at 10.30pm (1.30pm GMT, 8.30am Eastern) on February 21.

The event can be watched on Niconico and UStream.

According to Gematsu, Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO Andrew House will be present at the event, along with Sony Japan Asia president Hiroshi Kawano and Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida.

The first Japanese customer to purchase a PlayStation 4 will have their console directly handed to them by House and Kawano.

A number of other special guests will also appear at the event, providing video messages and gameplay demonstrations. Confirmed guests include:

  • Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid V)
  • Shinji Hashimoto (Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts III
  • Naoki Yoshida (Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn)
  • Toshiro Nagoshi (Yakuza series)
  • Mayuko Kawakita (model)
  • Viking (comedian)

Sony recently confirmed that it sold roughly twice as many PlayStation 4 systems than Microsoft's Xbox One in North America across January

Specific sales numbers were not officially released by either Sony or Microsoft, as is typical during monthly NPD reports on North America sales, but a statement issued by Sony confirmed that PS4 outsold Xbox One by a factor of 2:1.
