Diddy Kong is the 24th character to be confirmed for Smash Bros. 4.
Donkey Kong's partner first made his Smash Bros debut in the last game, Super Smash Bros Brawl, so this marks his second appearance in the series.
"We've increased Diddy Kong's flexibility this time," says the game's producer Masahiro Sakurai in the game's Miiverse forum, alongside a screenshot showing "how far his punches stretch during his strong side attack."
Diddy Kong is only the latest in a number of returning characters who have been confirmed since the game's original reveal. Others include King Dedede, Luigi, Captain Olimar, Sonic, Princess Peach and Toon Link.
New characters will be making their Smash Bros debuts too. This Super Smash Bros trailer revealed Capcom's Mega Man and Animal Crossing's villager will be playable for the first time in the series, while Wii Fit Trainer was confirmed shortly afterwards.
Although Kid Icarus: Uprising studio Project Sora and series lead Masahiro Sakurai are heading up the latest Smash Bros. project, Namco Bandai is handling development duties.
Namco Bandai's team includes producer Masaya Kobayashi (Ridge Racer) and director Yoshito Higuchi (SoulCalibur).
"All the top creators from Namco Bandai are gathered here to create a never-before-seen dream team for this project," Kobayashi said when the partnership was announced in June 2012.
Nintendo has yet to give release dates for Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, though they are expected to launch in 2014.
