New Dead Island: Epidemic screens hit as closed beta kicks off

Another look at Deep Silver's free-to-play MOBA spin-off

Deep Silver has released a new zombie-infested batch of Dead Island: Epidemic screenshots to coincide with the launch of its closed beta.

New players wanting to join the closed beta can do so via the official site, and "receive exclusive in-game items and rewards as the Closed Beta proceeds which they can keep and use after the beta ends".

First revealed at Gamescom in August 2013 as a free-to-play PC game, Epidemic will be a Steam exclusive and is, according to the publisher, a ZOMBA game (that's Zombie Online Multiplayer Battle Adventure).

The title has support for up to twelve players, split into three teams of four. Each team has to battle both the other teams and the hordes of zombies roaming the island in order to be the winner.

Zombies range from standard shambling types to heavily infected creatures and "freakish super bosses", the latter potentially requiring all three teams to co-operate in order to take them down.

A crafting system also features in the game, allowing players to forge their own customised weapon arsenal. According to Deep Silver: "There will be hundreds of weapons, trinkets and items that players can craft, and once crafted, these weapons can continue to be improved to fully suit a player's personality and play style.

Earlier this month Deep Silver announced details regarding sign-ups for the Dead Island: Epidemic closed beta.
