Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition announced for Europe

Spiny Shell returns in new game; SNES Mario Kart hits Wii U eShop on March 27

Nintendo has announced a Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition package.

The software bundle, which is so far only confirmed for release in Europe, will come with a Spiny Shell collector's item alongside a physical copy of the game.

The pack is available to pre-order now online now ahead of the Mario Kart 8 release date of May 30.

Customers in the UK & Ireland who have already pre-ordered a standalone copy of Mario Kart 8 will have the opportunity to upgrade pending availability.

Today's announcement marks the first confirmation that the divisive Spiny Shell item will feature in the new game. Nintendo says: "One of the most devastating items found in-game, expect to see the Spiny Shell back in its natural environment knocking champion racers off the podium."

The platform holder also announced that SNES classic Super Mario Kart will launch on European Wii U eShop on March 27. It will be the US version of the game running at 60hz, and will be priced at £5.49.

Fans who purchase the Virtual Console title before June 30 2014 can get a discount of £5.49 on Mario Kart 8 if they buy a digital copy of the new racer between release and June 30, providing the purchase takes place on the same console.

Select retailers are offering another pre-order bonus in the form of keyrings (Golden Dash Mushroom, Red Shell, Bullet Bill), while GAME is offering pre-order customers a Wii U Mario Kart racing wheel while supplies last.
