Planets3 is a sci-fi themed Minecraft, and it looks gorgeous

The latest new project whipping up a Kickstarter craze is Planets3, a game we're willing to bet wouldn't exist had it not been for the pioneering work of Markus Persson.

But irrespective that the game doesn't quite pass an originality test (which, let's face it, is something the majority of games fail at), the new project seems to be shaping up nicely.

In development at French indie outfit Cubical Drift, this voxel-based adventure game is set for launch next year on PC (with Mac and Linux support possible if certain stretch goals are reached).

The voxelated landscape has a sci-fi vibe to it, with distant cuboid planets outlined in the sky (you can, apparently, build a spaceship and travel across the galaxy).

At the time of going to press, the project has hit $81,000 of its $250,000 fund goal, with 22 days remaining.

As shown in the pitch video below, the game features a number of ways that players can express themselves, such as by crafting their own weapons and apparel.

Backers ($15 or more) will get access to PC version of the game. Check out the Kickstarter page here.
