Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams 'sells 1 million copies'

Indie Kickstarter game reaches new user milestone

Indie title Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams has sold over one million copies, according to its developer Black Forest Games.

Originally started as a Kickstarter campaign in 2012, Twisted Dreams was eventually released on PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U.

The digital game is a spiritual successor to The Great Giana Sisters, an '80s platformer that was notorious for being nearly identical to Super Mario Bros.

"One million sales," said managing director Andreas Speer. "That absolutely qualifies Giana Sisters as an indie hit, and yet it took a Kickstarter campaign to be able to develop the game.

"It wouldn't have been possible in the classic way through publisher financing. It is only thanks to the dedication of our 6000 backers that one million gamers (and counting) got the chance to play Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams."

It has not been confirmed whether these one million sales include the copies that were made available for free to European PlayStation Plus owners in October 2013.

It also does not specify whether the figure counts copies sold as part of Humble Indie Bundle 11, which also included titles such as Guacamelee, Starseed Pilgrim, Dust: An Elysian Tale and Fez.
