Google Maps adds Pokemon for April Fools

Gotta obsessively tap 'em all

Google wants you to be the very best, like no one ever was.

It's offering all Google Maps app users on iOS and Android the chance to become geographic Pokemon Masters with one of its April Fools 2014 practical jokes - though it's only a prank insofar as the weirdly compelling sprite hunt will inevitably drive you mad.

To play the Google Maps Pokemon Challenge, just open up the app, tap the search bar, then select "Press Start". It will drop you off near Google's Palo Alto, Calif. headquarters with a few Pokemon ripe for the tapping, then you're good to pinch and swipe your way around the Earth looking for more.

There are 150 to nab in total (though purists might sneer that the list spans generations). You may just find a few hanging around the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, and Great Pyramids of Giza, to give you an idea of where to find them.

Google teased the fun little mini-game with this tongue-in-cheek video promo. Do note that we've yet to be threatened by fire-breathing Charizards.
