Pokémon X & Y are the fastest selling 3DS games

Titles approaching 12 million sales, having launched in October 2013

Pokémon X & Y recently became the fastest selling 3DS games of all time, according to the Pokémon Company.

Having launched worldwide in October 2013, Pokémon X & Y sales stand at almost 12 million units, helping lifetime Pokémon video game sales surpass 245 million, the firm claimed on Monday.

Nintendo said in January that Pokémon X & Y was by far its best selling first-party game in the nine months ended December 31, 2013. In a list of global software sales for the first three quarters of the firm's fiscal year, the company announced Pokemon X & Y sales of 11.61 million units.

Second and third on the list were two more 3DS games, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, with 3.52 million sales and 2.57 million sales respectively.

CVG's Pokémon X & Y review called the release "a major leap forward for the franchise". Reviewer Ben Griffin concluded: "X & Y's general structure remains almost identical to its forbears, but the rest of it - the detailed 3D visuals, touchscreen minigames, Mega Evolutions, new elemental type and, of course, the new Pokémon themselves - has resulted in more innovation than the last three games combined. It's bigger, more complex, and makes its hardware sweat."
