Smash Bros. 4 to release on 3DS ahead of Wii U version

Handheld version expected this summer; Wii U to arrive in winter

Smash Bros. 4 will release on Nintendo 3DS this summer, ahead of the Wii U version in winter 2014, Nintendo has confirmed.

The fighter sequel has also seen its roster expand with five new characters; Yoshi, Sheik, Zero Suit Samus, Charizard and Greninja.

Game director Masahiro Sakurai said in a Nintendo Direct stream on Tuesday: "These titles are packed with content, so we need time to do them justice. Thank you all for your patience."

In Australia, the 3DS edition will release this winter, while the Wii U version will release during the summer season.

In development in collaboration with Namco Bandai, Smash Bros. 4 is being developed simultaneously for both Wii U and 3DS.

However, series lead Sakurai had previously suggested the two versions of the game would not necessarily release in the same window.

The long-awaited fighter sequel will boast returning playable characters include King Dedede, Luigi, Captain Olimar, Sonic, Princess Peach, Toon Link and Diddy Kong.

Meanwhile, several characters will make their debut, including the Animal Crossing Villager, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Punch-Out's Little Mac and Rosalina and Luma from Super Mario Galaxy.

Nintendo used its Tuesday Direct to announce the 3DS exclusive Smash Run mode: a 4-player battle game set in a dungeon-like stage full of power-ups to collect.

Nintendo also teased the ability for players to add their own nuances to fighters with 'custom move sets', usable in local play and online multiplayer with friends.
