Blizzard applies for trademark on 'Overwatch'

May be related to L4D designer's unannounced game

Blizzard Entertainment has filed for a trademark on the word "Overwatch" as it relates to computer games and related merchandise.

The application was filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office on April 1 and spotted by Player Attack on Wednesday. No other details accompanied the trademark.

A Blizzard job listing for an unannounced game may or may not be related to the trademark filing. The posting for a lead producer says the game's development philosophy was inspired by Hearthstone.

"With Hearthstone, Blizzard has revived its tradition of creating small and nimble game teams and we are following in those footsteps," the listing states - the free-to-play digital game has attracted more than 10 million players.

"As part of our team, you will join in the leadership of a small but mighty band of developers and exert your talents to help craft our processes, organization, goals and execution."

Turtle Rock founder Mike Booth, who now works for Blizzard, Tweeted about the same listing in December. The military vernacular trademark and Booth's prior expertise with Left 4 Dead and Counter-Strike may give some indication of Blizzard's unannounced game, assuming they are tied to the same project.
