Grand Theft Auto V PC: Wishlist

What we'd like to see from a PC version of Rockstar's blockbuster

Welcome to 'Wishlist', a new regular feature in which we channel our inner amateur game designer and fanboy nerd to come up with a list of improvements, features and pie-in-the-sky ideas for games.

Zoom

Long time CVG readers may remember a little feature called 'What we want to see'; we had a lot of fun doing that, and it encouraged some great discussions, so we thought it was about time to bring it back. Except, with a less rubbish name this time.

This week we're tackling a big one: Grand Theft Auto 5 on PC. We have no doubt that you'll have a lengthy list of tweaks, features, and outlandish ideas of your own that you want to see Rockstar include in the game (if it is ever released). Because of that, we encourage you to write down detailed design documents in the comments below, should you have the inclination. Maybe Rockstar will see it and hire you... (probably not though).

It's also worth noting that this Wishlist is for Grand Theft Auto 5 and not Grand Theft Auto Online, we'll have a separate one for that in the future.

What we know: Petitions, retailer listings and release dates

The last time we heard any official discussion on a GTA 5 PC release Take-Two CEO Karl Slatoff said "there's really nothing for us to say about that".

Despite Rockstar and Take-Two's silence, fans haven't given up hope (a GTA 5 PC petition has reached over 650,000 signatures). And nor should they, Grand Theft Auto 5 was one of the biggest video game releases of all time, a critical darling and commercial behemoth, it makes perfect sense to take a second slice of the pie by servicing the eager PC crowd.

Grand Theft Auto 4 launched first on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but a PC version hit the market seven months after the latter. If we follow a similar time frame, this would put GTA 5's potential PC release around late spring or early summer 2014.

But is it actually going to happen? We think so.

In October 2011, responding to requests for a Red Dead Redemption release on PC and questions about Rockstar's commitment to the platform, the studio indicated the PC is still an important part of its business.

"We hope that with the announcement that LA Noire is coming to PC this fall, and the knowledge that our next big game Max Payne 3 will have a PC release (plus that we've released both Grand Theft Auto IV and the Episodes from Liberty City for PC), we can finally put to rest any misconceptions that we've 'abandoned the PC platform'.

"All we can say is that whenever it is viable (technically, developmentally and business-wise) for us to release a game for PC (or any other particular platform) - we will and we usually do".

After confirming the GTA 5 console release date, Rockstar followed up with statements indicating that a GTA 5 PC was "up for consideration".

"We can do what we want wherever there's the appropriate business opportunity and chance to find a market," said Rockstar vice president Dan Houser

"If that's on Apple we put something on Apple," he added. "Wherever it might be. I think that's the fun in what we do. We see ourselves as a content company that uses technology. We don't make it; we use it to make the most fun stuff."

In July 2013 a job posting for Rockstar Leeds called for a 'graphic programmer' that would work to "help bring [Rockstar's] latest titles to the PC platform". The post, whichheavily implied work was underway on GTA 5 PC or Red Dead Redemption PC (or both), was quickly removed.

The position also require "working with skilled developers on Next Generation games", which would also make sense if Rockstar were thinking about using that PC version as a base for the much-requested PS4 and Xbox One versions.

A number of retailers have listed GTA 5 for PC release. Most notably, Amazon websites

The realities of whether GTA 5 will be released or PC won't stop us from laying out what we'd like from it, so here we go.

What we want: Modding, VR support and jetpacks
