CCP reviewing World of Darkness IP after cancellation

White Wolf and Onyx Path publishing to continue

CCP will evaluate the World of Darkness property as it continues work on the pen-and-paper games.

After reporting news of the World of Darkness MMO's cancellation and subsequent layoff of 56 CCP employees, we asked the EVE Online developer what impact this would have on its relationship with World of Darkness creator White Wolf. The two companies merged in 2006, just before work on the MMO kicked off.

"We believe that the World of Darkness IP is very valuable and will be reviewing the status of it in the coming weeks and months, but we have no specific plans under consideration at this time," a CCP spokesperson told us.

CCP and White Wolf license out work on pen-and-paper games like Vampire: The Requiem and Werewolf: The Forsaken, both of which are part of the greater World of Darkness role-playing system and universe.

"In addition, our licensing relationship with companies like Onyx Path Publishing continues without change," the spokesperson said.

CCP chief executive Hilmar Pétursson said canceling the World of Darkness project was "one of the hardest I've ever had to make." It had been defined as an open-world, player-ruled MMO, much like EVE Online.

"We dreamed of a game that would transport you completely into the sweeping fantasy of World of Darkness, but had to admit that our efforts were falling regretfully short. One day I hope we will make it up to you."
