RIP Bob Hoskins, the real-life Mario

Legendary British actor dies aged 71

All of us here at CVG are saddened by the news that the great British actor Bob Hoskins has died of pneumonia aged 71.

Suffolk-born Hoskins starred in countless amazing films such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Hook and Brazil.

He was also nominated for an Adacemy Award for Best Actor in 1987 for his performance in Mona Lisa.

However, gamers will best know him for playing Mario in the Super Mario Bros movie, a film that was infamous for sharing very little in common with its source material.

Hoskins famously hated the film, calling it "the worst job I've ever done" in an interview with The Guardian.

"It was a f**king nightmare," he told the newspaper. "The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set! F**king nightmare."

Captain Lou Albano, who played Mario in the Super Mario Bros Super Show, passed away in 2009. Danny Wells, who played Luigi in the same show, died in late 2013.

CVG would like to pay its deepest condolences to the family of Bob Hoskins. He may not have enjoyed being Mario, but he certainly gave us plenty to smile about.
