Video: CCP unveils 16ft tall EVE Online monument

CVG has caught on video the moment developer CCP Games officially unveiled its Eve Online monument in its hometown of Reykjavik, Iceland.

The 'Worlds Within a World' monument, unveiled on Wednesday, stands over five meters tall (16ft) and has the names of all the main characters of all active EVE Online players (as captured on March 1st, 2014) etched upon it.

The structure was created by artist Sigurður Guðmundsson with help and input from EVE Online's own art directors Börkur Eiríksson and Ásgeir Jón Ásgeirsson.

A web-based application has been launched to assist in finding specific names on the monument's surface, and a laptop buried under the monument will serve as a time capsule with videos, messages wishes and more from the players and the development staff.

In a brief chat with CVG, Mayor of Reykjavik Jon Gnarr likened the significance of the monument to global music star Björk, who also originated from the small southwestern Icelandic town. "We are enormously proud of CCP. Being such a small community [in an] isolated place, CCP is in a way similar for us to Björk - it's something that, despite our smallness, we can contribute important creative stuff to the world," he said.

Speaking at the monument's original announcement in February, CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Petursson said, "Our intention is to immortalize the contributions of the millions of people of the EVE universe in a way that extends beyond their immortality in our games.

"Honoring them as part of a timeless monument shows how virtual lives and adventures have reached a new level of meaning and impact that weaves into and enhances those that happen in this world."

The monument has been unveiled a day before Fanfest 2014, the annual gathering celebrating the EVE Universe held at Harpa Concert and Convention Center in downtown Reykjavik.
