The Dragon's Teeth DLC will feature the addition of a ballistic shield. The two-handed shield will serve as mobile cover in the expansion, which is set to focus on urban warfare.
During a GDC session in March, senior animator Ryan Duffin said DICE initially wanted to create a shield which players could use in combination with handguns. However, development schedules and last-gen hardware memory constraints meant the feature couldn't be implemented. Instead, players will be able to melee with the shield, which has an attack range of about one metre.
Dragon's Teeth is the fourth of five Battlefield 4 expansions due for release by the summer of 2014. It can be pre-purchased as part of the £39.99 / $50 Battlefield Premium subscription offering. The other four expansions are Second Assault, China Rising, Naval Strike and Final Stand.
In late April, DICE deployed new higher-performance servers to combat Battlefield 4 rubber-banding issues affecting users on certain platforms during 64-player online matches.
And in early April the studio began recruiting players to help test Battlefield 4 fixes before they roll out to the public, starting with work on lag problems.
"Among the first things we will work on is the 'Netcode,' which is what the player experiences with the game world including player-to-player interactions like damage registration," DICE said. "This involves tweaking to the 'tickrate' servers and networking in general."
