Smash Bros 4: Little Mac wireframe version revealed

Alternate 'costume' pays homage to arcade original

Nintendo has posted another screenshot of Little Mac's alternative costume in the upcoming Super Smash Bros for Wii U & 3DS.

The Punch-Out!! star was confirmed to be making his Smash Bros debut in February, and Nintendo briefly mentioned during a Nintendo Direct in April that he would also have an alternative wireframe costume.

The new screenshot, posted by game director Masahiro Sakurai in the Smash Bros Miiverse community, shows this costume in action.

The outfit is a tribute to the original Punch-Out!! arcade game, which featured a third-person viewpoint with the camera directly behind the player. In order that players could see the opponent they were fighting against, the boxer's body was presented as a see-through wireframe model.

"Here's wire frame Little Mac re-envisioned from the original Punch-Out!! game," Sakurai said on his Miiverse post. "The man that actually drew the pixel art wire frame in the original was none other than Shigeru Miyamoto. He said he drew the pixels for the wire frame on graph paper."

New Smash Bros 4 characters were announced in April, including Yoshi and Pokemon pair Charizard and Greninja. Sheik and Zero Suit Samus, who previously appeared as alternate forms for Princess Zelda and Samus in earlier Smash Bros. games, will now have their own dedicated spots on the roster.

These characters will join already announced figures including King Dedede, Luigi, Captain Olimar, Sonic, Princess Peach, Toon Link and Diddy Kong.

Several characters will also make their Smash Bros. debut in the fourth instalment, including the Animal Crossing Villager, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer and Rosalina and Luma from Super Mario Galaxy.
