Flappy Bird will have multiplayer when it returns in August

Also promises to be 'less addictive'

Flappy Bird will return to the app stores with multiplayer and 'less addictive' gameplay, it has been reported.

Dong Nguyen recently confirmed the news on CNBC program Closing Bell, according to the programme's talent producer Donna Burton.

The show's host Kelly Evans later confirmed that the game will release in August. When it does return it will boast a multiplayer component and less addictive gameplay.

Meanwhile, Burton also reports that Nguyen is currently working on another project which involves "one guy jumping from building to buildings."

Following the unexpected viral popularity of Flappy Bird earlier this year, Nguyen removed the game from the app store on the grounds that it "ruins my simple life".

He later explained to Forbes that he worried about the game's addictive nature.

"Flappy Bird was designed to play for a few minutes when you are relaxed", Nguyen said. "But it happened to become an addictive product.

"I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it's best to take down Flappy Bird. It's gone forever."

Hype surrounding the game was so high that at one stage, a third of iOS games released in one day were Flappy Bird clones.
