Interceptor Entertainment and 3D Realms have revealed Bombshell, their reworked Duke Nukem action RPG.
Bombshell stars Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison, a cyborg woman with a mechanical arm repurposed from mysterious alien technology. Her quest to save the president of the United States will see her conquer multiple worlds full of hostile aliens.
Bombshell will unlock 10 weaponized modifications to her bionic arm, levelling up as she progresses through an assortment of side quests and non-linear isometric stages.
The premise closely resembles that of Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction, a heavily teased but never officially announced action RPG from Interceptor and 3D Realms. That project was put on hold after legal threats from Gearbox, though Interceptor says it may still happen:
"Lawsuits take time, and are often a long, drawn-out process. Meanwhile, we wanted to be productive - our creative team couldn't wait around for the issue to be resolved," the developer said in an official FAQ.
"It's impossible to say what will happen in regards to our previous project. It might return, it might not. We want to make great games without sacrificing our integrity, and Bombshell allows us to do that beautifully."
Bombshell is planned for release on PC and PS4 in the first quarter of 2015.
