More Xbox announcements planned before E3

Microsoft doing "some things early" to make space for "special" E3 reveals

Microsoft plans to make further Xbox announcements before its E3 press conference takes place next month.

The company has made a number of significant announcements over the past few weeks, headlined by its decision to release an Xbox One without Kinect for the first time. More are to follow in the coming weeks, Xbox boss Phil Spencer told Twitter followers.

Microsoft said last week that, beginning in June, it will no longer gate entertainment apps behind an Xbox Live Gold subscription. It will offer a refund to current subscribers who no longer wish to use the service in light of the upcoming changes.

The company also said that Games with Gold will launch on Xbox One next month with Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and Halo: Spartan Assault. June's Xbox 360 Games with Gold offering will include free Dark Souls, Charlie Murder and Super Street Fighter IV downloads. A single Gold membership will provide owners with access to the free games for both Xbox One and Xbox 360.

And on Friday, Microsoft named and dated Halo 5 Guardians for release on Xbox One in autumn 2015.

Titled 'Game On', Microsoft's E3 2014 media briefing will begin on June 9 at 9:30am PT / 12:30am ET / 5:30pm BST.
