Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service discontinued

Platform holder axes online play on DS and Wii games

Nintendo will discontinue the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service worldwide today.

This means that online play, leaderboards and matchmaking will no longer be available on DS, DSi and Wii. Affected titles will include Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Pokémon Black & White. A full list of games impacted by the move can be found here.

The following online features will still be available to DS and Wii users:

  • Internet Channel
  • Nintendo DS Browser
  • Amazon Instant Video
  • Netflix
  • Nintendo DSi Browser
  • Nintendo DSi Shop
  • Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay & Play
  • Wii Shop Channel
  • YouTube

While Wii U and 3DS software will not be affected due to their use of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection's successor, Nintendo Network, Wii games accessed via Wii Mode on the newer console will lose their online features.

The first Wi-Fi Connection games were Mario Kart DS and Tony Hawk's American Sk8land for DS in 2005. The first Wii Wi-Fi Connection game was Pokémon Battle Revolution the following year.
