Nintendo and Mercedes Benz Japan have partnered to release free Mario Kart 8 DLC.
This summer, players will be able to download the new Mercedes Benz GLA class car and race it in the Wii U game.
As the real car is not suited to kart racing, the in-game vehicle will be a modified version with no roof, allowing Mario and friends to stick their heads out while driving.
The DLC will be free, and is part of a larger campaign for the GLA class car in Japan, which is also being supported with Mario-themed television commercials.
A thirty-second commercial called 'Go! GLA' will run in Japan from May 30 and will feature the GLA class car racing through the original Super Mario Bros, before switching to a real-life version where a realistic Mario gets out of the car.
For now this promotion has only been confirmed for Japan. CVG reached out to Nintendo UK for a comment on its western release and was given the following statement:
"The announcement this time was made by Mercedes-Benz Japan regarding their collaboration in Japan with NCL. As for the information relating to the distribution of the GLA kart for MK8 outside Japan, we will be able to announce in the near future."
Mario Kart 8 launches today in Japan and is released this Friday, May 30 in North America and Europe.
CVG's Mario Kart 8 review called the game "a multiplayer event showcasing Nintendo doing what it does best: bashing your expectations (which should already have been lofty) into dust and then rebuilding them anew into something bigger and better than you had imagined."
