The tenth Mortal Kombat game is due to be announced today, according to series co-creator Ed Boon.
The reveal was initially teased by rapper Wiz Khalifa, who tweeted the following image:
I am #WHOSNEXT @noobde pic.twitter.com/H3Znk3t7P2— We Dem Boyz (@wizkhalifa) May 29, 2014
This was backed up by Boon, who replied: "Yes you are Next @wizkhalifa !! On June 2nd Kombat Kontinues... #WHOSNEXT"
Today's likely reveal is the final part of a series of Mortal Kombat 10 teases by Boon, which he's been posting on Twitter for the past several weeks.
Early in May he initiated a mysterious countdown, stating that an unspecified announcement would be made in 29 days.
Then, in mid-May, Boon tweeted a photo of the back of a car with the letters 'MKX' visible.
Earlier this year Kiefer Sutherland revealed that he had provided his voice to a forthcoming instalment in the long-running fighting franchise.
The last Mortal Kombat game rebooted the series when it released on Xbox 360, PS3, PC and PS Vita in 2011. In our review, we said: "It lacks the nuance and depth of Street Fighter, but by adding balance to its own familiar shtick and giving us the ace Tower mode MK has made itself a real alternative."
