Handheld has sold over 20 million units since 2004 launch

Sony will cease PSP shipments in Japan later this month, the company has announced.

According to the latest data from retail monitor Media Create (via NeoGAF), the handheld has sold 20,141,072 units in Sony's home nation since launching in December 2004. Just shy of 1,500 units were sold in Japan during the week ended May 25.

The Verge reports that Sony also stopped shipping PSP units to North American retailers in January 2014.

Shipping will end in Europe at an unspecified date, although the system is expected to remain available in emerging markets for some time. Worldwide PSP sales have exceeded 80 million units to date.

Sony is running a Japanese promotion until August 29 designed to get users to upgrade to Vita or Vita TV, Siliconera reports.
