The first trailer for The Vanishing of Ethan Carter flies viewers through its visually rich world of forests, lakes, and murder.
Created by The Astronauts, a Warsaw-based studio founded by three former members of Gears of War: Judgment dev People Can Fly, the first-person exploration game lets players assume the role of a detective with the supernatural ability to visualize the scenes of people's deaths.
"This is the first trailer for the game, with the focus on the mood of the story the players can experience, and the visuals one can expect from the game," the developers wrote on their blog. "The trailer is a real-time in-game capture (PC), just with the cameras set to tell a certain story."
The studio describes the game as "weird fiction" inspired, though its environments are derived directly from photographs through a technique called "photogrammetry."
It's scheduled to release in the third quarter of 2014.
