The game is "somewhere in the middle" stage of development, BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy said in May.

Last November, BioWare published a series of tweets teasing "the next chapter of Mass Effect", promising new characters to fall in love with, new enemies to encounter and new worlds to explore.

The following month, BioWare Edmonton and Montreal general manager Aaryn Flynn said the next Mass Effect game was in a playable state and coming along nicely. "Great time playing the next Mass Effect game in Montreal," he teased. "Ambitious. Beautiful. Fresh but recognizable. And fun."

BioWare Montreal has taken over development duties on Mass Effect, with original developer BioWare Edmonton now working on a brand new IP. The story of Mass Effect 4 won't relate to Shepard or the events of the previous three games, while the new title will share "core systems" with BioWare's next game, Dragon Age: Inquisition.

In early March, Flynn said BioWare has discussed the possibility of remastering Mass Effect Trilogy for Xbox One and PS4. Listings for Mass Effect Trilogy on the new consoles surfaced on a Chilean retail website in late April.
