Dead Island 2 will release for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Spring 2015, or Autumn in Australia.
Announced at Sony's E3 2014 press conference earlier today, the installment is in development by Spec Ops: The Line studio Yager Development.
Departing from the series' island settings, Dead Island 2 will take place in California, publisher Deep Silver confirmed.
"Several months after the events on Banoi, the United States military has put the Golden State under full quarantine," the announcement statement read.
"Now a restricted zone, California has become a bloody paradise for those who refuse to leave their homes and an action-packed playground for renegades who seek adventure, glory and a fresh start."
The Unreal Engine 4 powered title will support eight player drop-in, drop-out cooperative and competitive play. Several classes will be available ranging the 'action-oriented' beserker through to the stealth-oriented hunter.
