Video: See Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's nemeses grow

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's lore-spinning nemesis system is the focus of a new trailer published Tuesday.

The mechanic allows individual characters of the orcish hordes to remember their interactions with main character Talion. They will grow in strength if they manage to kill the wraith-haunted ranger, and will react with appropriate confusion the next time they encounter him in battle.

The named enemies will also acquire particular traits based on their personalities, which may dictate their combat prowess as well as whether they're more likely to fight to the death or run away.

Talion can dominate these characters using his wraith-infused powers, letting him infiltrate orcish society to gather intelligence, weaken opposing warlords, or gather orcish soldiers for his own cause.

Middle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor is a new story set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings. It puts players in control of Talion, a "valiant ranger" whose family is slain before him the night Sauron and his army return to Mordor.

The game will be released on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on October 7.
