Final Fantasy XIV director 'really wants an Xbox One version'

Square Enix trying to convince Microsoft "this needs to happen"

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn could yet launch on Xbox One, but there's a significant hurdle to overcome.

Game director Naoki Yoshida told Pocket-lint that Square Enix is in discussions with Microsoft about bringing the PlayStation and PC game to its consoles, but the stumbling block concerns Xbox Live rules which currently prevent massively multiplayer games from working across platforms.

"We really want to do an Xbox One version," he said. "The thing is, A Realm Reborn is all about cross-platform compatibility. Anybody from any platform can play together. We don't want to split our community into people who play on this platform or play on that one.

"So we're currently in talks with Microsoft, trying to convince them that this is what needs to happen."

Yoshida also told the site that a Mac version of Final Fantasy XIV is in development.

A Realm Reborn launched on PC and PS3 in August 2013, and on PS4 in April 2014.

CVG's Final Fantasy XIV PS4 review labelled the game "the best Final Fantasy game in years and the finest MMO you can currently play on a console".
