Steam reaches 8 million concurrent users

Milestone is broken during final day of Summer Sale

Steam has broken the 8 million concurrent users milestone for the first time in its history.

As noticed by users on NeoGAF, at one point on Sunday evening over 8 million gamers were using the service at the same time.

The previous highest ever number of concurrent users on the Steam stats page was around 7.5 million, which occurred over the Christmas period in 2013.

However, a new record high of 8,020,834 was recorded at 16:03 PDT on Sunday June 30 (00:03 on Monday morning UK time).

The most likely cause for the new surge in concurrent users is the Steam Summer Sale, which is currently in its 'encore' period and ends at 10am PDT (6pm UK time) today.

At the Steam Dev Days conference in January 2014, Valve announced that Steam had reached a milestone of more than 75 million active users, up 10 million since its previous report in October 2013.

Its growth accelerated over the 2013 holiday season, as the new 75 million figure meant Steam's active user account grew by 15 percent in just three months.
