Star Citizen funding tops $48 million

Crowd support still going strong for Wing Commander creator's new game

Crowd funding for Star Citizen has shot up over the $48 million milestone.

That's up $1 million in just over two weeks since it hit the $47 million mark on June 24, showing continued strong momentum from backers. Now at precisely $48,080,381 at the time of writing, the fund looks to be well on its way to another million-dollar milestone.

Studio founder and Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts set up a Kickstarter for the game in mid-2012 with an initial target of $500,000. The total raised by the funding drive's conclusion was $2,134,374.

However, Roberts' development studio Cloud Imperium has since continued to raise funds on the Star Citizen website by selling additional spaceships and other virtual goods priced from $25 to over $200 per item.

The $48 million mark triggered the 'unlocking' of The Retaliator ship. "The symbol of the United Empire of Earth's power is the next ship to receive a slick commercial. Aegis Dynamics is in dire need of good publicity since the end of the of the Messer era. We currently have the Cutlass and the Constellation commercials in production and now the Retaliator will be added to that list," reads the blurb.
