Space Invaders movie in the works

Warner Bros. to produce film version of Taito's arcade classic

Warner Bros. has reportedly acquired the rights to make a film based on the 1978 Taito arcade game Space Invaders.

According to The Wrap, the film will be produced by Akiva Goldsman, who previously wrote the screenplays for The Da Vinci Code, I Am Legend and Batman & Robin.

Joining him as producers will be Joby Harold (writer/director of Awake) and Tory Tunnell (producer of Holy Rollers).

No plot details or other cast or crew announcements have been made at this early stage.

Space Invaders is the latest in a number of upcoming Hollywood movies based on video game franchises.

Last month it was confirmed that a Dead Rising movie is set for production at Legendary Pictures, while Vertigo is said to be working on a Thief film.

Sony will begin filming the Uncharted movie in early 2015, while the company is also planning to release a number of CGI films based on its games. A Heavenly Sword movie is due out in September, a Ratchet & Clank film in 2015 and a Sly Cooper movie in 2016.

The Warcraft film recently finished shooting, Ubisoft is currently rewriting the script for its Assassin's Creed movie, while Warner Bros. is reportedly in talks with Mojang to make a Minecraft film.
