FIFA 15 cover stars Clint Dempsey in North America

USA captain joins Lionel Messi on this year's box art

Clint Dempsey has been announced as the North American FIFA 15 cover star.

EA recently revealed the global FIFA 15 box art, which stars four-time FIFA Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi. He adorns the box art worldwide for the fourth time, but as with previous FIFA releases Messi will be joined by local talent on a number of regional covers.

USA captain Dempsey helped his team progress through a tricky World Cup 2014 group with Germany at the expense of Portugal and Ghana, before the side were eliminated by Belgium in the round of 16.

He became the first American to score goals in three consecutive World Cups, netting the tournament's fifth fastest goal in the process.

The 31-year-old forward spent seven seasons in the Barclays Premier League with Fulham and Tottenham before returning to the US to play for current side Seattle Sounders FC.

On Microsoft console versions of the game Dempsey will wear his Seattle Sounders strip, which is sponsored by Xbox. On PS4 and PS3 he'll appear in the US men's national team kit.

"It's an amazing opportunity in my career to be on the cover for FIFA 15, a game that has played a big role in growing the popularity of the sport in America," said Dempsey. "To join the class of other elite athletes who have appeared on previous covers is very humbling and I am extremely grateful for this honour."

The FIFA 15 release date is September 26 on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS and Vita.
