Sam Raimi will produce The Last of Us movie and Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams may co-star as Ellie, Screen Gems revealed at a Comic-Con panel Friday.
Raimi, who produced the original Spider-Man trilogy of films and the Evil Dead series, made the announcement in a surprise appearance at a San Diego Comic-Con panel dedicated to the film on Friday, Deadline reports.
Sony Pictures Entertainment revealed a teaser image for the film after the panel, showing a character who resembles Ellie holding a switchblade.
"It's gonna be a great character journey, a great love story, and great horror fiction," Raimi said.
Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark in HBO's Game of Thrones, was teased as the current favorite to play Ellie, though no casting decisions were confirmed at the panel.
Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann also appeared at the panel. He reportedly has the final say on most of the film's major creative decisions, including casting and choice of director.
Druckmann said in May that the film will be a direct adaptation of the video game, rather than being inspired by its post-apocalyptic tale.
"As far as where we go and how we make it fit into a film, how it takes into account the unique properties of film... we're not sure yet," Druckmann had said. "We're only just scratching the surface."
