Jools Watsham, lead man at Mutant Mudds developer Renegade Kid, has revealed yet another new title in developer at small indie studio.
Xeodrifter is a 2D, exploration 'Metroidvania' game for 3DS, inspired by Super Metroid, Metroid Zero Mission, and Castlevania: Circle of the Moon - three of Watsham's favorites in the sub-genre, he revealed via GoNintendo.
"Xeodrifter is the story of an interstellar drifter traveling the stars on a mission of exploration," Watsham explained. "In this particular installment of the story, we join our nomad as he embarks on the exploration of small cluster of four planets in the omega sector, after a collision with a rogue asteroid damages his warp drive. A scan of the neighboring planets reveals a number of energy signatures on the planets that may provide the special material needed to fix his warp drive and get back to cruising through the cosmos."
While early images of the game show a map system similar to that of Super Metroid, Watsham goes on to detail a gameplay design that caters more to short play sessions.
"My goal from the beginning of Xeodrifter was for it to be a small, bite-sized experience, much like Ikachan in terms of scope. I want it to be something that you can dip into for fun, and accomplish in a relatively short period of time. But, there will be enough secret goodies located off the main path to keep the thorough gamers among us busy for a little longer," he said.
This adds to an already surprising list of titles in development at the relatively small studio, which has either been put on hold or cancelled.
"Treasurenauts is still going to happen," assured Watsham. "I am really excited about Treasurenauts, and look forward to returning to it ... we will get back to Treasurenauts once Xeodrifter is completed."
This is the latest in a line of extensive delays to Treasurenauts, which was originally planned for release by the end of 2013, before being pushed back to a since long-missed Q1 2014 window.
On the studio's other games, Watsham said, "We are not actively working on Cult County," a first-person horror game for 3DS, "or the Razor game that we announced. Due to publisher issues outside of our control, it looks like the Razor game is dead for us," he added
There's no release date for Xeodrifter, but Watsham describes development for the title as "on the final march towards completion".
