Super Mario Kart hits US Wii U Virtual Console

Original Super NES classic gets surprise release on the eShop

US residing Wii U owners can now download Super Mario Kart via the Wii U eShop.

The Super NES classic and original Mario Kart game was released via the digital store on Wednesday, August 6 - a day ahead of the typical weekly eShop updates on Thursdays.

Released for the Super Nintendo in 1992, Super Mario Kart was the game that kicked off one of Nintendo's most successful long-running franchises, with the eighth game in the series, released for Wii U in May this year, hitting 2.82 million units sold in just one month.

The title accounted for over 50 per cent of all Wii U software sales (4.39m) during Nintendo's first financial quarter ended June 30.

Nintendo will launch Mario Kart 8 DLC alongside a new patch on August 27 in Japan and US. The DLC will include three free Mercedes-Benz karts: GLA, W25 Silver Arrow and 300 SL Roadster.
