Mario Kart 8 DLC to add Zelda, Animal Crossing tracks

Link, Tanooki Mario, an F-Zero vehicle and 16 new tracks confirmed

Nintendo has revealed two Mario Kart 8 DLC expansions that will add Link as a playable racer, along with tracks in the worlds of Zelda, Animal Crossing, F-Zero and Excitebike.

Two add on packs will be released, one in November 2014 and one in May 2015, Nintendo has revealed in what could possibly be a prematurely posted listing on the official Nintendo UK Store website.

The earlier pack, titled 'The Legend of Zelda X Mario Kart 8' pack, will come with Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach and Link as playable racers. In the latter, the Animal Crossing Villager, Isabelle and Dry Bowser will be added.

Each pack will also contain four new vehicles and two new cups - each cup with four new tracks as usual - meaning a total of 16 new tracks will be available for Mario Kart 8 by May 2015. Tracks in the Zelda and Animal Crossing universes will be included, Nintendo confirmed.

While the official blurb makes no mention of them, screenshots of courses themed on Excitebike and F-Zero can also be seen in the final image in the gallery above. Additional 'retro' tracks, including Wario's Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii, also show up in the small thumbnails.

The DLC packs will cost £7 each, according to the Nintendo UK website, and buyers of both will receive a bonus reward in the form of "eight different-coloured Yoshis and eight different-coloured Shy Guys".

Oddly, the Nintendo Store website contains the option to pre-order the DLC, although the eShop link to do so is currently broken, leading to speculation this could be a premature unveiling planned for a more formal announcement.

Here's the full official description:

Each Add On Content pack will contain two new cups, each with four courses, which, in total, increases the number of available courses by 50 percent. The Add On Content packs include classics like Wario's Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii, as well as new courses, some taking place in the worlds of The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. New vehicles will also arrive with each pack, including the Blue Falcon kart representing the F-Zero franchise in the first AOC pack.

This comes just as Nintendo prepares to release its first ever Mario Kart 8 DLC in the form of three free Mercedes-Benz karts: GLA, W25 Silver Arrow and 300 SL Roadster.

Mario Kart 8 recently passed the one million sales milestone in US, becoming the second million-seller Wii U title in the US region and significantly boosting Wii U hardware sales. This was shortly after Nintendo confirmed in June that it had sold two million Mario Kart 8 copies worldwide (including The Americas, Europe and Japan).
