Project Morpheus is '85% complete', says Yoshida

Sony exec says smartphone components will keep VR headset relatively cheap

The upcoming Project Morpheus headset for PS4 is 85 per cent complete, according to SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida.

Yoshida told Wall Street Journal that Sony has completed most of the work needed to make the product available to consumers, though he was still unwilling to give an estimated release date.

When asked about the potential cost of Morpheus, Yoshida was similarly non-committal, but did state that many of the components in the headset are also used in Sony's smartphones rather than being bespoke components, thereby keeping the price lower.

In August, Yoshida stated that motion controls will be revitalised with the introduction of virtual reality, adding that the Move controller will come into its own when Morpheus sparks a call for full 3D motion tracking.

Move isn't the only peripheral that will be given a new lease of life when Project Morpheus arrives; the PS4 Camera, currently mainly used as a webcam for Twitch broadcasts, will be required for Morpheus, as its dual array stereoscopic cameras will provide pinpoint head tracking data.

In development for three years, Sony officially revealed Morpheus at GDC in March, although the device was given only minimal exposure during the company's E3 press conference last month.

Sony has invested significantly in the upcoming PS4 virtual reality headset, according to PlayStation chief Andrew House.
