Monday 26-Jan-2004 5:39 PM Older-than-the-hills web 'news' reminds us of some important new information we really ought to share with you Burnout developer Criterion's inaugural foray into the cluttered first-person shooter genre, Black, has been shrouded in secrecy since the original announcement. Indeed, so impenetrable is the veil of obfuscation draped over the UK developer's endeavour, Internet news today seems to have completely forgotten the title was announced, er, last July. Sadly, we were unable to contact the relevant official press release for further confirmation at the time of writing.
However, all this has been a means to an altogether more positive end: jogging our memories to remember that the very first details of the game recently appeared in the UK games press and we thought you might just be interested...
The bold premise of Black, according to Criterion, is that it will shake up the FPS genre in the same way Burnout, with its focus on crashing, did with driving games. The game is set in an anonymous warzone in Eastern Europe (it's believed Russia was the original setting for the game), where you and a crack team of NPCs prowl through an all-action, mission-based affair with a heavy emphasis on gun-toting action - with a conscious shunning of stealth-based gameplay.
The game is said to be packed with destructible environments and objects, on a par with that found in Konami's Metal Gear Solid 2, but since the game isn't due until the end of 2005, we'd expected Criterion to raise the bar considerably.
Reportedly inspired by Hollywood action flicks, you can expect Black to be an explosively flashy affair; and if it's half as much fun as the superb Burnout series then we're in for a special treat indeed. We'll have more on Black real soon.
