Namco unveiled the next instalment in the King of the Iron Fist tournament at E3, with the debut of Tekken 5 running on arcade hardware.

Following the events of Tekken 4, Kazuya and Heihachi Mishima are faced with an army of Proto Jack robots under the control of new villain Raven, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Wesley Snipes in the Blade movies.

Graphically the sequel looks very similar to Tekken 4, so a PS2 version down the line is inevitable. Two other new characters are Asuka Kazama (we assume she's related to Jin's mother Jun), and Feng Wei who specialises in kung fu. Along with the new characters it looks like everyone from Tekken 4 will appear in the sequel.

The biggest innovation for Tekken 5 is a return to level-ground arenas, ditching the raised terrain of the last game. Namco has stated that it would like the title to resemble Virtua Fighter a bit more. One indication of this is the addition of move buffering. This allows you to input a move while already performing one - a first for the Tekken series.

It also appears that the active elements of each stage will be increased. Throwing a character into a wall now produces a shower of debris and the levels look far more dynamic - one stand-out so far being Heihachi's burning mansion.
