Colin McRae Rally 2005

Codemasters, in their infinite quest to ensure that you're never more than six feet away from a machine capable of playing Colin McRae Rally, have almost completed work on the inevitable PSP conversion. This well-proportioned family hatchback will include at least 30 rally cars, half a dozen championships and a range of Wi-Fi modes. It is, to be frank, the perfect accompaniment to a painful afternoon on the toilet.

The latest addition to the extended McRae family has been designed with PSP's portability in mind; according to our source, the structure of the game enables you to play for anything from five minutes to five hours without ever having to go through the ordeal of having to save your progress. In terms of the Single-player modes we've already been promised a full Career mode, in addition to a 4WD Championship, with other modes to follow.

The waters of the multiplayer element are a little muddier at present, with nothing specific being either confirmed or denied at present. Judging by the competition though, we expect a Wi-Fi eight-player mode and to be able freely share track times and ghost cars. As for the comparison with WRC, it's too close to call at present. Either way, portable McRae is shaping up to be a great off-road blast.

Looks great, plays great, but faces stiff competition (as ever) from Sony's WRC.
