26-Jun-2005 Ah, the war. Where would videogames be without it? They'd probably still all be like Jet Set Willy no doubt. Here's the latest addition to the scorched skies of the 1940s, Ubisoft's Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII. Every famous battle of World War II, from Pearl Harbor to the Battle of Britain, will be played out across huge levels, in a style that promises to be a big departure from the usual cloud-busting nonsense.
Blazing Angels will heavily feature squadron-based gameplay, which'll be ideal for the promised 20-player online skirmishes. As you improve offline, performing heroic deeds and downing enemy planes, your squadron will improve too. They'll become more confident, eventually evolving into an ace fighting force. You'll then be able to take on the other ace pilots of the world online to see who the ultimate squadron leader is.
There'll be over 40 authentic WWII aircraft, including the famous P51 Mustang, the P38 Lightning, the B-17 Flying Fortress, the Luftwaffe's Messerschmitt 109, the Spitfire, and the Japanese Zero to choose from, each of which will bring distinctly different game dynamics to online battles. A Flying Fortress may be heavily armoured for example, but she's going to handle like a three-legged dog up there. You'll have to choose whether to train in head-to-head dogfights, or rely on group numbers to ensure success. Either way, it looks as though the first real contender to Crimson Skies could be on its way.
