If ever there was an aptly named game, it's Duke Nukem Forever. The next instalment in the FPS series featuring the wisecracking, un-PC Duke has been in development for something approaching a decade now. But astonishingly, in an interview with FiringSquad, developer 3D Realms' CEO, Scott Miller, raised the spectre of a scenario which could well prompt religious nuts and conspiracy theorists to declare that the day of Apocalypse is nigh: 3D Realms intends to develop a sequel for the ultimate item of vapourware.
Surely completion of Duke Nukem Forever's sequel would have an irreparable effect on the fabric of the space-time continuum?
Never mind hell freezing over; we rate the chances of seeing a sequel to Duke Nukem Forever in our lifetimes as roughly akin to those of Osama bin Laden taking up a job on Wall Street. Nevertheless, when asked whether 3D Realms has any games in mind after Duke Nukem Forever and Prey (another FPS with more than half a decade's development behind it, currently being finished by developer Human Head), Miller said: "We've already mapped out a sequel for Prey, from a high-level story standpoint, and of course as soon as Duke is done we'll begin a new one. We are also getting the ball rolling on an unannounced project, which has yet to be signed by a publisher." Steady on, old chap - you sure you can handle the workload?
Miller admitted to regret that Duke Nukem Forever has been on the burner for so long: "Well sure, no one wants to spend so long on making a game, and we've definitely screwed up along the way. But in the end, it'll work out fine as long as we produce a hit."
And he revealed that the much-touted Duke Nukem movie is also on the back-burner: "The company that had the rights failed to make use of them, and so the rights reverted back to us. We'll wait until the new Duke game is released before talking to Hollywood again. Anyway, with the way Hollywood has so poorly handled game-based movies recently, perhaps it was best that a Duke movie didn't happen."
A noble sentiment, but as long as Jean-Claude Van Damme is available to play the eponymous hero, with his ludicrous one-liners, ever-present shades and unfeasibly bulging biceps, it surely doesn't matter when the movie is made.
In order to speed the process of developing the sequel to Duke Nukem Forever (hence accelerating the impending Judgement Day), we'd like to suggest a few names for the project. Duke Nukem Forever And A Day is perhaps a touch optimistic. Duke Nukem: Till The End of Time doesn't really trip off the tongue. So it's a toss-up between Duke Nukem: Eternity and Duke Nukem: Never. What's your opinion?
Miller came out with one final revelation: you will be able to download Prey when it is finished, "Via www.DiStream.com. We're currently working with them daily to get stuff up and running in time for the game's launch." Before you ask, we have no idea when Duke Nukem Forever is going to ship. But it will. Honest...
If Rockstar can produce 3 gigantic GTA games, Nintendo can make 4 wonderful Legend of Zeldas, Bethesda can make 2 incredibly large and detailed Elder Scroll games, Valve make 2 Half-Lifes, etc. etc... 3D Realms should have made 1 FPS.
what about dolph lundgren or the guy from ernest saves christmas
No, Campbell or Russell, no one else will fit. Snake is the nearest thing to Duke, and all the one liners in Duke come from Campbell. I doubt they'd get Campbell though, he never liked them ripping off Ash...
If The Rock gets it, I'll kill someone. Ideally, it'll never be made into a film. Just look at Doom3... Or don't. I didn't.
I remember seeing an actual video of DN:F about 3 years ago. It looked like it could give Half-Life 2 a run for its money. Unfortunately that ship has sailed.
I swear they must have made and re-made this game about 4 times now.
They probably have just kept the media bandwagon rolling so people do not forget the name and series.
The game probably hasn't been touched for years (if it still exist and wasn't completey scrapped ages ago)
There'll complete some awesome game on a brand new engine in a couple of years and then claim it was so complex it took the last ten years to plan and program... just to add to the media hype
But hey, if it appears and it's good, who cares just play and enjoy. If it appears and is pants then it will get even more riddicule than daikatana due to the history of the perpetual stories and rumours and alleged developement time..
